Florian Ebner, head of the Photographic Collection at the Museum Folkwang in Essen, was invited to design the German contribution to the 56th Biennale Arte in Venice. His impressive curatorial concept has put together an array of artistic works that explore the subject of migrant images and open us up to new facets of 'seeing'. These works deal with images inspired by a spirit of resistance in an age of digital overexposure.

As a considered response to the fact that images and other data have now developed a dynamic that is no Ionger comprehensible for the individual, Ebner has assembled four artistic positions that set out in search of resilience – in images, in people, and in art. Tobias Zielony, Jasmina Metwaly / Philip Rizk, Hito Steyerl, and Olaf Nicolai present various images and outcomes of migration and examine issues of inclusion and participation in social processes, grappling with imagery from metropolitan centres, while also creating a space of freedom.
